"One of the biggest dilemmas that you face with online conference calls is a lack of eye contact. The View-You Cam is the solution…It creates more meaningful conversations."

"Tired of looking like a shifty-eyed weirdo on Zoom? That’s where the View-You Cam comes in! The clever little device allows you to position the camera over the screen, making it possible to keep direct eye contact with the person on the other end of the video call… to foster more meaningful connections."

Here’s a short film explaining in more detail what we call ‘the digital dilemma’.

Story

An incredible 1.4 billion voice and video calls were made on WhatsApp on New Years Eve 2020. Of those millions of people that made video calls - none could look each other in the eye. And it’s the same in business: a year ago Zoom had on average 10 million daily meeting participants. It now has 350 million per day. A lot of those are business meetings - and there is no way for those colleagues to make eye contact.

The View-You Cam solves that problem:

You attach it to your screen, and move the webcam around, positioning it right next to the eyes of the person you’re talking to, or right in the middle of the team you’re addressing, and two-way online eye contact is at last possible.

Who would benefit from making eye contact when communicating online? Well, pretty much everyone! In this short film we spoke to a handful of people about the View-You Cam including a celebrity fitness expert, a professional broadcaster, a Doctor and a communications expert.

Technical Specifications

Tech Spec

The View-You Cam will be a high quality full HD camera. We've ensured the patent pending clip mechanism can be attached to any screen, including the angled screen of an iMac. Padding will ensure it does not in any way damage your screen. We hope you like this short exploding animation!

Design

The creators of the View-You Cam have been working with a product design agency to get it from idea to reality. In this short film we caught up one of our designers, Tom Verdon from Salsus Design Ltd. We asked him to talk us through the process - from first getting our brief, right through to creating a product which is ready to be manufactured.

The View-You Cam is patent pending and its name is Trade Marked by the UK Intellectual Property Office.

Environment

At the heart of this product is a desire to make remote communication more effective and more enjoyable, thus encouraging people, both professionally and personally, to carry on interacting remotely even after Coronavirus. If people feel their online communication is more effective and meaningful, they’re less likely to get back into the car, or onto a plane, once normality returns.

On a more product-specific note: The View-You Cam has been carefully designed to be a hardwearing durable product with high quality materials proposed such as 6061 8mm aluminium rod and an ABS case which is a rigid, high impact resistant and durable material.

All the major components in the product are recyclable and can be separated as the product has been designed to be disassembled using screw fasteners and snap fittings as opposed to adhesives or other permanent fixing methods where possible.

  • Hardwearing and durable product

  • Recyclable components

  • Disassemblable

  • Low waste packaging

Meet Our Team

Dan Baker: Dan Baker was a tv newsreader for ITV in the Midlands for 10 years. He then became Head of Media for a major UK utility, and has now been working as a communications consultant and coach since 2009. He moved his business entirely online when the pandemic began, and soon realised that one thing he was missing was the ability to make two-way eye contact with the people he was coaching and training online.

Jonathan Pykett: After a brief stint at the BBC, Jonathan Pykett has worked as a camera operator, editor, 3D animator and technical specialist in the corporate world for 15 years. He works with Dan Baker, providing technical support, editing and camera work, and was working online with Dan in August 2020 when the need became apparent for a webcam that can move around the screen to enable two-way eye contact.

Quotes

Why do we think making eye contact is so important? Is it just us, or do other people also think seeing eye to eye is a crucial part of basic human interaction? Well, just to check, we’ve delved into centuries of literature. It seems we aren’t alone in our views…

“A lover's eyes will gaze an eagle blind.”

Charlotte Bronte

“The soul, fortunately, has an interpreter - often an unconscious but still a faithful interpreter - the eye.”

“I have a big thing with eye contact, because I think as soon as you make eye contact with somebody, you see them, and they become valued and worthy.”

Brad Meltzer

“Not every President is a great speaker. Not every President is a great thinker. But in the modern era, every single President is a master of one thing: eye contact.”

Sophie Kinsella

“We're just looking and looking at each other. And I can feel something new between us, something even more intimate. Eye to eye. It's the most powerful connection in the world.”

Taylor Swift

“But then you make eye contact with someone … and it clicks and you’re right there in love again.”
